Best AWS Certifications
AWS's certification program is genuinely tiered and widely respected -- here's how to pick the right one for where you are.
The Certification Tiers
- Foundational: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner -- a broad, non-technical-leaning overview, a reasonable starting point without prior cloud experience
- Associate: Solutions Architect Associate (the most broadly valuable one for most roles), Developer Associate, or SysOps Administrator Associate
- Professional: Solutions Architect Professional and DevOps Engineer Professional -- deep, difficult exams for experienced practitioners
- Specialty: Security, Machine Learning, Networking, and others -- focused certifications for a specific specialization
A Realistic Path
If you're new to cloud, start with Cloud Practitioner to build foundational vocabulary, then move to Solutions Architect Associate once you have real hands-on practice (deploying actual infrastructure, not just reading) -- it's the most broadly useful associate-level cert for most engineering roles. Only pursue a Professional or Specialty certification once you have genuine hands-on experience to back it up; the exams are difficult enough that studying alone, without real practice, is a hard way to pass.
